Grocery Stores and Shopping Near Emerald Isle, NC

Crystal Coast Local 6 min read

One of the first questions every vacation renter asks when they pull into Emerald Isle: where’s the grocery store? If you’re spending a week in a rental house on Bogue Banks, you’ll need to stock the kitchen. Here’s where to shop on and near Emerald Isle, North Carolina, plus a few places the locals know about that you won’t find in the tourism guides.

Grocery Stores in Emerald Isle

Food Lion

Food Lion is the original grocery store on the island and still the most convenient for most renters. It’s located at 8700 Emerald Drive (Highway 58) in the Emerald Plantation Shopping Center, roughly in the middle of Emerald Isle.

The store carries everything you need for a week at the beach: standard groceries, produce, deli meats, a bakery section, and a decent wine and beer selection. The prices are typical grocery store pricing - not inflated the way some beach town stores are.

The catch: On Saturday turnovers (when most weekly rentals start and end), this Food Lion gets absolutely packed between noon and 4 PM. Everyone on the island is doing the same thing at the same time. If you can, shop on your way in or wait until Sunday morning.

Publix at Egret Landing

Publix opened in Emerald Isle and quickly became a favorite for families who know the chain from trips to Florida. It’s a full-service grocery store with an excellent deli, a bakery that makes good sub sandwiches, and a produce section that’s a step above what you’ll find at most beach town stores.

Publix offers online ordering and curbside pickup through their app, which is a game-changer for vacation weeks. Place your order before you arrive and pick it up without leaving the car. If you’ve ever tried to shop with four kids who just sat in a car for six hours, you understand why this matters.

Grocery Stores Across the Bridge

Lowes Foods

Lowes Foods is located across the B. Cameron Langston Bridge in Cape Carteret, about a 15-minute drive from the center of Emerald Isle. It’s a larger store with a broader selection than the island groceries, including a good butcher counter and a hot food bar.

Lowes Foods also offers online ordering and curbside pickup. If you’re coming to Emerald Isle from the west on Highway 24, this is a convenient stop on your way in.

Walmart Supercenter

The nearest Walmart is in Morehead City, about 25 minutes from Emerald Isle. It has the widest selection and lowest prices, but the drive makes it impractical for quick trips. Stock up here on the way in for bulk items, snacks, and household supplies. Save the island stores for fresh groceries and top-ups during the week.

Seafood Markets on the Crystal Coast

You’re on the Crystal Coast. Eat seafood. Here’s where to get it fresh:

Local Seafood Markets

Several seafood markets operate near Emerald Isle and along the Bogue Banks area. Look for markets that sell catch from local boats - the shrimp, flounder, and grouper from these waters are some of the best on the East Coast. Ask what came in that morning and build dinner around it.

The markets near the bridge in Cape Carteret and along Highway 24 tend to have the freshest selection and the best prices. Many sell steamed shrimp by the pound, ready to eat. Grab a pound, a roll of paper towels, and some cocktail sauce, and dinner is done.

Beer, Wine, and Liquor

North Carolina has its own system for alcohol sales:

  • Beer and wine: Available at all grocery stores, gas stations, and many convenience stores. Food Lion and Publix both carry a solid selection.
  • Liquor: Sold only at ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) stores, which are state-run. The nearest ABC store to Emerald Isle is in Cape Carteret across the bridge. Hours are limited - they close earlier than you’d expect and are closed on Sundays. Buy your liquor early in the week.

Shopping Beyond Groceries in Emerald Isle

Emerald Plantation Shopping Center

The same shopping center that houses Food Lion has several other stores worth knowing about. You’ll find a few restaurants, a hardware store (useful when the rental house is missing that one thing), and assorted shops.

Beach Gear and Surf Shops

Several shops along Highway 58 rent and sell beach gear: chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, fishing rods, and everything else you forgot to pack. If you need a beach cart to haul gear to the beach access points, these shops stock them.

Beaufort and Morehead City

For real shopping - clothing, gifts, books, antiques - drive to Beaufort or Morehead City. Beaufort’s Front Street has locally owned boutiques, galleries, and gift shops in a walkable waterfront setting. Morehead City’s Arendell Street has a mix of chain stores and local shops.

These towns are about 25-30 minutes from Emerald Isle but worth the drive, especially on a rainy day when the beach is off the table.

Meal Planning Tips for Emerald Isle

A few lessons learned from many weeks of vacation cooking on Bogue Banks:

  • Shop before you arrive. Place a Publix or Lowes Foods curbside order for pickup on your arrival day. You’ll thank yourself when you walk into a stocked kitchen instead of a bare one.
  • Plan for one or two restaurant nights. Check the Emerald Isle restaurant guide and make reservations for peak nights. Cook the rest of the time.
  • Buy local shrimp. Seriously. Fresh Crystal Coast shrimp boiled with Old Bay, corn on the cob, and potatoes is the definitive beach house dinner. You don’t need a recipe. You need a big pot.
  • Stock up on breakfast supplies. Breakfast restaurants on the island fill up fast in summer. Cooking breakfast at the rental house saves time and money, and eating on the deck beats any restaurant view.
  • Bring coolers for the beach. Load them with sandwiches, fruit, and drinks from the grocery run. Lunch on the beach is better than lunch anywhere else, and it keeps you from losing your spot.
