Renting a Golf Cart in Emerald Isle: Rules and Tips
Golf carts are everywhere in Emerald Isle. They’re how families get to the beach, how neighbors visit each other, and how half the island runs errands without starting the car. If you’re renting a vacation home in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, renting a golf cart for the week is one of the best decisions you’ll make.
But before you hop behind the wheel, you need to know the rules. Emerald Isle has specific golf cart ordinances, and the police do enforce them. Here’s everything you need to know about golf carts on this end of Bogue Banks.
Emerald Isle Golf Cart Rules
The Town of Emerald Isle allows golf carts on all public streets with a few important exceptions:
- NC Highway 58 (Emerald Drive): You cannot drive a golf cart on Highway 58, the main road through town. Period.
- Coast Guard Road: Golf carts are not allowed on Coast Guard Road either.
- Crossing these roads: You can cross directly over Coast Guard Road or Highway 58 at a 90-degree angle, but you cannot cross at the intersection where these two roads meet.
- Sidewalks and bike paths: Golf carts are not allowed on sidewalks or on the Emerald Path bike trail. Stick to the streets.
Who Can Drive
This is the one that catches people off guard: no one under 21 can operate a golf cart in Emerald Isle. Not 16, not 18 - you must be at least 21. This is a town ordinance, and the police will ticket underage drivers.
Safety Requirements
- Seat belts must be worn by all riders at all times. The police write tickets for this.
- Golf carts must have headlights, tail lights, turn signals, mirrors, and a horn if operated on town streets.
- No open containers of alcohol. DWI laws apply to golf carts just like any other vehicle. You can be arrested for driving a golf cart under the influence.
Registration
Rental companies handle registration for their carts. If you bring your own golf cart, you need to register it with the Town of Emerald Isle before driving on public streets.
Where to Rent a Golf Cart in Emerald Isle
Two main rental companies serve the Emerald Isle area on the Crystal Coast:
Coastline Golf Carts
Coastline Golf Carts has been operating in Emerald Isle since 2002. They rent 4-seater and 6-seater carts and offer free local delivery to your rental house. Two-day minimum rental, three days on holiday weekends. They also sell new and used carts if you decide you need one permanently.
Emerald Isle Golf Cart Rentals
This company rents 4-seater carts starting around $75 per day and 6-seater carts starting around $95 per day, with a two-day minimum. Free delivery is included. They provide a map showing where you can and can’t drive.
Booking Tips
- Reserve early for summer weeks. Golf carts sell out fast during peak season, especially for the 4th of July and Memorial Day weeks. Book when you book your rental house.
- Check with your vacation rental company. Some rental homes on Bogue Banks include a golf cart or offer one as an add-on. Ask when you’re planning your trip.
- Inspect the cart at delivery. Make sure all lights, signals, and seat belts work. Note any existing damage so you’re not charged for it later.
Where to Go on a Golf Cart in Emerald Isle
Once you’re street-legal, here’s where to go:
Beach Access Points
Most beach access points in Emerald Isle are reachable by golf cart on residential side streets. Cart parking is available near many access points. This is the main reason people rent golf carts - loading up the kids, chairs, and cooler and rolling to the beach without fighting for a parking spot.
Bogue Inlet Pier
You can cart your way to the Bogue Inlet Pier area on residential streets. Park near the pier and walk out for fishing or sunset views at The Point.
Restaurants and Shops
Several restaurants along the side streets of Emerald Isle are reachable by golf cart. Just remember: you can’t take Highway 58, so you’ll need to use the parallel residential roads. The side streets run roughly parallel to the highway and connect through cross streets.
Neighborhood Cruising
Honestly, half the fun of a golf cart is just cruising the neighborhoods. The residential streets on the sound side are shaded by live oaks, and the speed limit matches perfectly with the 15-20 mph top speed of a golf cart. Evening rides after dinner are a tradition for families staying on the island.
Golf Cart Etiquette on Bogue Banks
A few unwritten rules that locals appreciate:
- Yield to pedestrians and cyclists. The streets are shared, and not everyone is watching for golf carts.
- Don’t overload the cart. Six people on a four-seater isn’t just unsafe - it’s illegal if they’re not all wearing seat belts.
- Drive with headlights after dusk. It gets dark fast on the island, and golf carts are hard to see without lights.
- Be mindful of noise. Late-night golf cart rides through quiet neighborhoods are not appreciated by the year-round residents.
Is a Golf Cart Worth It in Emerald Isle?
If you’re staying for a week and your rental house is within the residential streets (which most are), yes. A golf cart saves you from the daily hassle of loading the car for beach trips, finding parking, and driving Highway 58. Kids love them. Adults love them. And at $75-95 a day, splitting the cost across a family makes it comparable to a few rideshares.
If you’re only staying a night or two, you can probably skip it. But for a full Emerald Isle vacation week, a golf cart turns a good trip into a great one.
